I’ve extended my thinking to think of science and engineering as a pair of complementary protocols that enable innovation. You could say science/engineering is the TCP/IP of innovation.

This thought combined my thinking on science as protocol with Matt Stephenson’s thoughts as well as past discussions with Trent McConaghy on innovation = science (analysis) + engineering (Synthesis).
